A Journey: Two Views offers an intimate glimpse into breast cancer. Janette Maley was an art instructor at Kishwaukee College and a painter. Her husband, Arthur Hand, is a respected photographer. Janette was diagnosed with lobular carcinoma, a form of breast cancer, in 1998. Her ability to paint was affected and she turned to creating collages that depicted and represented her journey. As she faced a mastectomy, Janette asked her husband to photograph her body before it was radically altered. He did, but then continued to capture the experience as she faced her disease and treatment.
The couple created an exhibition of her collages and his photographs, A Journey: Two Views, that unflinchingly expressed and illustrated cancer and the effect it has on the patient as well as the patient’s family. The couple showed their exhibition around the U.S., including the International Museum of Surgical Science, as well as Indiana University, Yavapi College, Augsburg College, and Northern Illinois University. Janette Maley died in 2006.
A Journey: Two Views is being exhibited as part of the Women’s History Month activities at Kishwaukee College. Included with the Reception on March 19, luminaria purchased by students and staff at Kishwaukee College that bear the names of friends and family members who have faced cancer will be displayed. Proceeds from the luminaria sale are being donated to the American Cancer Society.
