The Latinos Unidos student organization at Kishwaukee College held a Homeless Sleep-out on November 6 – 7 on campus. The students built shelters from cardboard boxes and the students participated in reflection activities in which they were divided into groups and assigned biographies of people from various economic statuses. Each group had to interact with the others to meet basic needs and experience and reflect on the choices that are made to face challenges every day. The event kicked off with a presentation at noon on campus by “Big Mike,” a former homeless man who spoke about his experiences.
Participating students raised money via pledges totaling $500 and also collected 300 non-perishable food items as well as toiletries for Hope Haven in DeKalb. Pictured are the students with their City of Cardboard outside the Student Center at Kishwaukee College.
