Sycamore’s City Council meeting this week will be an interesting one for those who are wondering about the new DeKalb County jail progress. County officials and Sheriff Roger Scott plan to attend the Council meeting to give an update and answer questions from the public. Also in attendance will be Brian Kerner from Dewberry Architects, which is the architect for the project.
The group plans to give updates on how the jail project will look and it’s timetable for construction as well as answer questions from the public. The County Board approved a $35 million dollar borrowing plan to pay for the expansion which will begin in late March or early April. DeKalb County government agreed to take on the garbage from 16 other counties to use the tipping fees gained from the increased garbage to Waste Management’s landfill to pay for the jail expansion.
The meeting will be held this Tuesday, January 18th, 2016 at 7pm at the Sycamore Administrative Building, 308 W. State St. in Sycamore. For more information click here.

Instead of putting those rooms in a jail facility, a specialty facility could be built with a partnership between Northwestern Health and NIU.
If I needed mental health care, I would not want to be a patient in a jail.
Dekalb county needs a mental health facility i know i had a manic bipolor attack and got sent all the way to glen oaks hospital near Chicago where it was hard for family to visit plus the cost of transport is billing insurance alot dekalb is one of the countys that doesent have much care for mental health. Ben gorden pick and choose who they accept been turned away from them each time i call them im not ashamed to say i have mental illness but alot of people in dekalb county have no where to turn
The problem with adding 6 rooms DeKalb County Online is that they will find a way to justify adding 3 offices too.
I agree
They have the room
They need this there dumb for closing it down
6 rooms available where??? Seriously Kish wanted money from the community for the new building, it is time to have these services available!
There are specially designed mental health cells and suicide prevention in the expanded jail design. Obviously though Mental Health should be treated before individuals would need to go to jail. The county is working with Mental Health Board and Sheriff’s office on ways to keep mentally ill out of jail and offer accessible preventative care. We were one of the first counties in nation to adopt the national Stepping Up Initiative and working on obtaining a grant through that initiative.
If we are going to build this jail, couldn’t we do it with simple tilt up construction in an industrial area and eliminate all the fancy frills on the exterior facade? It appears to me that this building is going to be much more than needed jail space and just more fancy office space.

Okay so I just jumped into this I don’t know exactly what’s going on. Based on people’s response I am going to assume that they are having discussions about building a new jail and it sounds like they want to put 6 beds in the same adjoining unit for mental health patients?
