In 1997 the DeKalb County Chapter of VietNow hosted the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Traveling Wall in Sycamore. Again in 2007 they brought The Wall back for a second visit. Now they would like to once again have this poignant memorial visit Sycamore to pay respect and honor to the veterans who served in the Vietnam War.
As in the past, they cannot do this without a tremendous amount of support from the community. The cost to get The Wall is $7,500. They will also need funds for additional items, i.e. school field trips, sound equipment rental, chairs, staging, publicity, etc. that will be needed for the event. The goal is to raise $20,000-25,000 in order to provide a respectful presentation of the Memorial.
The chapter has set up an account at Resource Bank entitled, “Traveling Wall” where donations may be sent or they can be mailed to the following address: DeKalb County Veterans, 2500 N. Annie Glidden Rd. Suite A, DeKalb, Il. 60115. They will be recognizing each individual, business or organization that contributes based on the following donation structure:
$5000+ – 6 Stars
$1000 – 5 Stars
$750 – 4 Stars
$500 – 3 Stars
$250 – 2 Stars
$100 – 1 Star
Less than $100 – Honorable Mention
The dates for the Traveling Wall will be July 13-16, 2017 at Sycamore Park. The accessible path around the pond near the Good Tymes Shelter was built to accommodate the large volume of visitors and create a transition from the park atmosphere to a quiet place of remembrance, solace and awareness.
Any money raised above what is needed for this event will be used to honor veterans in DeKalb County.
There are also numerous opportunities for volunteers during the event. If you are interested in volunteering, please contact them at 815-756-8129. Ask for Steve or Renee. To learn more about the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Traveling Wall, visit their website here: DeKalb County Wall.
