he Hegeler Carus Mansion has recently been designated one of the 150 great places in Illinois by the Illinois Council of the American Institute of Architects. This designation comes as the Hegeler Carus Mansion celebrates 150 years since the completion of its construction in 1876.
“AIA is the largest, most influential network of architects and design professionals. That’s 101,000+ members who share a passion for design, a desire to change the world, and a commitment to the highest standards of practice.”

Edward C. Hegeler, the Mansion’s namesake, commissioned the renowned Chicago Architect of the day W.W. Boyington to design a stately home close to his company, M & H Zinc, with construction beginning in 1874. Boyington had risen to fame for his design of prominent structures such as the Chicago Water Tower. Boyington also engaged with other architects of the day, August Fiedler and William LeBaron Jenney on the interior design and furniture for the Mansion.
“This designation is a testament to the architectural significance of this magnificent structure,”
says Laura Walker, Executive Director. “The Mansion is a Great Place full of opportunities to
experience an architectural masterpiece.”
