Helping students pursue their dreams can prove difficult, especially with the interdisciplinary nature of environmental education.
NIU’s Institute for the Study of the Environment, Sustainability, and Energy (ESE Institute) is bringing together environmental educators, especially from two-year colleges, to build a northern Illinois environmental education network.
The ESE Institute will host the Regional Summit on Environmental Education from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday, June 8. This meeting – the first of its kind in the area – will focus on best practices in environmental education.
The summit will provide educators with the beginning tools needed to help students tackle challenges associated with finding jobs in their desired field or continuing onto four-year colleges and universities, such as NIU.
Faculty from regional colleges, as well as NIU, will present on topics such as sustainable energy systems, implementing a blended classroom and incorporating ethics into environmental education curriculum.
Several of the presentations will be given in the style of “TED Talks” to provide participants additional examples of how to move away from typical PowerPoint presentations in the classroom.
“This summit provides a great opportunity for regional educators to learn more about programs and research at NIU,” says Melissa Burlingame, outreach and communications specialist for the ESE.
More than 30 faculty are associated with the ESE Institute and conduct research regionally, nationally and globally.
Registration is open until Monday, June 1. (New users are prompted to create a login IDs.) The cost for the summit is $20 per participant, which includes lunch and parking.
