Laurie Elish-Piper
Laurie-Elish Piper, Ph.D., begins today as acting dean of the NIU College of Education.
“2015 marks my 20th year at NIU, and my commitment continues to grow,” she said. “I look forward to working with all of my colleagues to build upon the college’s tradition of educational excellence, as well as to make it the best place to work, teach, study and conduct research.”
During her two decades with the university, Elish-Piper has served in a variety of academic and administrative roles. She is both a Presidential Engagement Professor and a Distinguished Teaching Professor in the Department of Literacy and Elementary Education (LEED), and she recently completed a term as the university’s Presidential Advisor on College and Career Readiness. She is the longtime director of the Jerry L. Johns Literacy Clinic as well as co-director of the Center for the Interdisciplinary Study of Language and Literacy.
Elish-Piper’s professional service includes a term as president of the Association of Literacy Educators and Researchers, and she is currently a member of the International Literacy Association’s Board of Directors.
Marc VanOverbeke
Elish-Piper’s leadership team includes Marc VanOverbeke, Ph.D., who was named associate dean for academic affairs on June 1, 2015. VanOverbeke’s research focus is the history of education and educational policy. He has served as interim associate dean for the college for the past year. Previously he served as acting chair of the Department of Leadership, Educational Psychology and Foundations (LEPF). He joined NIU 2005.
Additionally, three new department chairs have recently joined the College: Gregory Conderman, acting chair of the Department of Special and Early Education (SEED) Anne E. Gregory, chair of the Department of Literacy and Elementary Education (LEED); and Chad D. McEvoy, chair of the Department of Kinesiology and Physical Education (KNPE).
A replacement for Associate Dean of Operations Jeffrey Hecht, who retires from the post Aug. 31, will be announced at later date.
