Senior Book Club: The Orphan Train

Meet with us the second Tuesday of every month for a book club just for seniors. We will be discussing The Orphan Train: A Novel by Christina Baker Kline. Between 1854 and 1929, thousands of orphaned, abandoned, or poor children were put on trains to travel from East Coast cities to Midwest farmlands to suffer an unknown fate – either to be adopted by loving families or delivered to a life of hard labor and servitude. These were the Orphan Trains, and 150,000-250,000 children suffered this fate. Read about one such child in Christina Baker Kline’s novel, The Orphan Train. Grief Support Group

Join others going through grief and loss and receive support in a safe and confidential setting with facilitation from the Family Service Agency of DeKalb County. In this ongoing grief support group, you will have the opportunity to share your experiences with grief, receive insight from peers and the facilitator on the grieving process, and learn more about grief. This group is open to adults experiencing grief from any loss, no matter where they are on this journey. A virtual option to attend this session is also available. Did you know that DeKalb has a roller derby team? Formerly known as the “Barbed Wire Betties”, the “Barbed Wire Roller Derby” has been training and competing since 2012. Get to know the team, its history, and their training process. Afterwards, you can attend a game at 6:00 p.m. at the YMCA in Sycamore. This is a free event. Registration is not required. Sip n’ Sew: Coffee Cozies

Coffee too hot? Weather got you down? Sew a coffee cozy for your favorite mug! Learn machine and hand sewing basics. Bring your mug for sizing. Tea, Coffee, and snacks will be provided. No registration required, but this program is first come, first served as seats are limited. This program is intended for adults.
