The DeKalb Municipal Band closes the 2016 season this Tuesday, August 23rd, at 8:00 p.m. at the Dee Palmer Band Shell at Hopkins Park. Joining them for the evening will be Rockford’s Mike Williamson, Vocalist. This is the closing night of the 162nd season for the DeKalb Municipal Band! Recognized throughout the country as one of the Midwest’s most historic musical organizations, the DeKalb Municipal Band holds the concert season at the Hopkins Park Band Shell, 1403 Sycamore Road, DeKalb. All concerts are held free for the public. To fully enjoy the evening people are encouraged to come early and bring a picnic dinner.
The DeKalb Municipal Band is a tradition that goes back to 1854, when a small group of musicians fresh from the California Gold Rush formed the Silver Cornet Band. Since then, a City Band in DeKalb has existed for over 160 years, uninterrupted by wars, and a depression. With such a record, DeKalb claims to be the city with the oldest continuous band in Illinois.
