Julie Craig, and Grace Thornton, with The Gracie Center receive a check from Todd Hughes of the DeKalb County Community Foundation Board of Directors.
The Gracie Center was presented with a check by Todd Hughes of the DeKalb County Community Foundation Board of Directors. Funding was made possible by the Foundation’s Community Needs Grant program. The Gracie Center will use the $2,217 to purchase a NSF refrigeration unit for the PopUp Shop, a vocational concession trailer for teaching and employing adults with disabilities and students transitioning to adult services.
The Gracie Center is planning to expand the concession options that are prepared in the PopUp shop with the addition of the NSF refrigeration. This past year the PopUp shop has been serving gourmet popcorns, candy and snow cones along with assortment of bottled beverages. With the addition of the refrigeration the menu will expand to pizza by the slice and new flavors for our snow cones. The PopUp shop continues to offer “Poportunities – from seed to sale!” for all our participants.
The Gracie Center has partnered with the DeKalb County Community Gardens at Walnut Grove Vocational Farm this past summer to grow popcorn. We hand picked 600 pounds with support from Youth Engaged in Philanthropy and other community members this past fall. We hope to expand our partnership this spring to include vegetables for our pizzas, garlic for our garlic obsession popcorn, as well as fruits for our snow cone flavors.
The goal of The Gracie Center is to offer vocational training opportunities that will support adults with developmental disabilities in DeKalb County to achieve a greater sense of independence and quality of life.
