Dan’s Video Corner – How to Select a new television
Hello, my name is Dan Thurston and I am the Director of Electronics for Grants. I have over 13 years of experience in appliances and electronics. However, TV’s have always been my passion! I am always amazed at the new technologies and offerings that seem to change on a daily basis, so I thought I would create a blog that will help to educate and answer your questions before you start the buying process. The first item to consider when selecting a TV should always be size. Simply measure between where you will be sitting and the new TV.
• A 26-30 inch screen is best for distances between four to seven feet.
• A 32-42 inch screen is best for distances between five to ten feet.
• A 44-56 inch screen is best for distances between eight to thirteen feet.
Remember that screen size/distance ratios are only estimates and vary based on price and personal preference. Along with the distance, it is also very import to measure the area where the TV will reside, take note of any restrictions or size limitations. A helpful hint is to sketch the room and one our Sales Associates will assist you in making the decision that is right for you.
The next step into your video journey will be to determine the type of television? If you’re a TV geek like me, you’re going to want 4k Ultra HD, or OLED (more on this subject in my next blog), but with limited content and a very high price point you really should consider a more cost effective option. Plasma is an excellent option for sports buffs and movie enthusiasts, and if you’re looking for a smoking deal and do not have a lot of light coming into your room there are some very affordable selections in sizes ranging from 42” to 60”. Most of you will end up purchasing an LED. They are becoming more and more affordable, with features like WIFI, 3D, increasingly faster processors, and most look great even in direct sunlight. I would highly recommend getting any new TV with some sort of a Wi-Fi or network based connection. It allows your new TV to get system and software upgrades, access a wealth of online content such as Netflix, YouTube, and other streaming based content. 3D is a feature that you can expect to come with higher end models. I would consider this to be more of a bonus at this time than a must have option, but with the increasing adoption of 3D programming, you should keep it in mind.
Lastly look at the picture quality of the TV’s that you are considering, go with your gut feeling on what is the best picture. Everyone has a little different preference and with CMR (clear motion rates) ranging from 60Hz to 960Hz you have to find the picture that you like best in your price range. It’s not always an easy decision but a well trained and knowledgeable associate can really help. Hope this was informative and if you have any questions for me I would be more than happy to help you decide which TV is best for you, Email me at dthurston@grantsappliance.com and we can figure it out together.
