Over spring break, the Division of Information Technology is wrapping up a major project to maximize the speed and security of NIU’s core network.
What’s in it for you?
- New network infrastructure across campus increases the speed of NIU’s network. Ten-gigabit connections have replaced one-gigabit connections in most campus buildings.
- Increased bandwidth will be available for the residence halls, the growing number of mobile devices on campus, Internet2 and other data-heavy research in geography, high-performance computing and physics.
- Redundant connections within the NIU network and out to the Internet keep services online if there is a power outage or a fiber is cut. Traffic is automatically rerouted, significantly reducing the possibility of service disruption due to equipment or fiber failures.
- Redesigned firewall and security infrastructure will protect NIU from threats both internal and external and provide a more secure network environment.
