Clarification on Changes Coming to e-Waste Collections

Earlier this week DeKalb County Online published an article about the changes coming to DeKalb County in terms of e-waste collections that drew quite a bit of questions and attention on our Facebook page. An email to the Health Department produced the following response:

Residents within the city limits of Sycamore, Genoa, and Kirkland are encouraged to utilize the ‘At Your Door’ service by Waste Management.  This service is included with the garbage contracts in those cities which allows the residents to recycle electronic and household hazardous waste at their door for no additional cost.

We also asked about which items would be accepted at the Household Hazardous Waste Collection and got the following response:

We will accept the following items for the household hazardous waste collection.

Acceptable: Oil Based Paint, Paint Thinner, Herbicides, Insecticides, Pesticides, Pool Chemicals, Cleaning Products, Mercury, Used Oil (5 gallons or less), Fluorescent lamp bulbs, Lawn Chemicals, Solvents, Antifreeze, Hobby Chemicals, Aerosol Paints

Not Acceptable: Latex Paint, Alkaline Batteries, Ammunitions, Explosives, Radioactive, Materials, Car Batteries, Sharps, Needles, Biohazardous Waste, Tires, Cylinders, Trash, Business Waste, Electronic Waste, Full Drums of Waste, DEA Controlled Meds

DC Trash is unable to continue providing the monthly e-waste event services for DeKalb County (in the towns of DeKalb, Waterman and Sandwich) due to increased costs associated with e-waste disposal. DC Trash will however, continue to accept e-waste at their facility located at 8 S. Hartness Place in Cortland, IL 60112. Please contact their office at (815) 758-7274 for information and to schedule e-waste disposal at their facility.

The DeKalb County Health Department will be hosting two Electronics Recycling events this year at the DeKalb Taylor Municipal Airport, 3232 Pleasant St. in DeKalb. June 2nd and September 22nd, both days from 9am – noon, are the two dates of these events in 2018. These are free events for residents only, all must show an ID. Tube TV’s and monitors will be accepted along with other electronics.

There will be a Household Hazardous Waste Collection on May 19th, 2018 from 9am – noon at the DeKalb County Farm Bureau, 1950 W. Prairie Rd. in Sycamore.

A Paint and Textile Recycling event will be held on July 14th, 2018, from 9am – noon at the DeKalb Taylor Municipal Airport, 3232 Pleasant St. in DeKalb. Latex and oil-based paints will be accepted. Cost varies by size of container and may range from $3 – $10. Paint will be used to make new plastic paint pails. Clothing and household items will be accepted for free.
