DeKalb, IL – DeKalb’s 2024 budget lowers the City’s property tax rate while focusing on public safety with nearly all new positions devoted to the Police and Fire Departments.
The budget for Fiscal Year 2024, which was approved by the City Council on Dec. 11, includes nine new firefighter/paramedics to staff a fourth fire station being planned near the corner of West Taylor Street and South Annie Glidden Road.
The new station, which has received the support of the Council, is needed to lower response times in the City’s southwest quadrant. These response times currently average six minutes, over the four-minute standard set by the National Fire Protection Agency. The new hires will also provide more personnel to handle an increasing number of calls, which have risen 33 percent since 2017.
