Shopping for a dishwasher means much more than it used to – it’s not just about hookups and color anymore. If you’re hunting for the right dishwasher for your new or renovated kitchen, consider the following as you make your choice:
Size: When it comes to dishwashers, size does matter. You might have to fill the same space as your old model, or you might be squeezing an appliance into a smaller-than-average kitchen. Kitchens.com notes that the standard size dishwasher is about 24 inches wide, 24 inches deep, and 24 inches high, but at Atherton Appliance & Kitchens and BSC Culinary we offer models that vary in height and width, as well as portable dishwashers and small sizes for limited-space kitchens.
Efficiency: In this day and age, it’s important to consider both energy efficiency and water savings, both for the environment and because of the rising cost of utility bills. We offer numerous ENERGY STAR rated dishwashers and resource efficient models. All of ASKO’s current dishwashers, for example, have earned the ENERGY STAR label and offer low water consumption.
Noise Volume: Many of today’s dishwashers have been designed to make less noise than their predecessors. Samsung’s DMT800RHS model, for example, is the quietest dishwasher in its class (and it’s also ENERGY STAR compliant). We can show you a variety of dishwashers designed to operate at low volumes.
Racks Options: Have you put any thought into the organization and size of your dishwasher racks? Again, modern dishwashers have come a long way. Aga’s Prot*™ Quiet Running & Integrated Dishwasher has integrated dishwasher racks with room for 14 place settings, a dedicated cutlery rack, and even a mesh bag for small items. Dishwashers are now available with three racks instead of two for extra large loads, or with adjustable racks that can accommodate larger items one day, and be repositioned the next to hold more plates or bowls.
Exterior Styling: Of course our showrooms provide the basics, including stainless steel, black, and white dishwasher exteriors. But we also offer a variety of less common exterior styles. GE, for example, can supply custom panels on some models that will enable your dishwasher to virtually disappear into your cabinetry. Gently bowed exteriors with bold, stylish lines are also available.
Built-in or Portable: Built-in dishwashers are becoming more popular as kitchen designs move to a seamless, blended look. And if you need a portable model because your kitchen has limited water hook-ups, we will work with you to choose one that will fit within your space.
Controls: Many people like traditional dial controls, but others find that they collect dirt or are at risk for easier breakage. To address this issue, a number of appliance brands are making more flat control panels available. Front controls are easy to access, but hidden top controls are also an option if you want to conceal the controls along the top edge of the dishwasher door. Hidden top controls offer a more contemporary look.
Technology: If you want your dishwasher to do some of the thinking for you, many premium brands feature exciting new technologies. Miele’s Future Series, for example, offers a Perfect GlassCare system that ensures optimal, consistent results with each use. Viking’s 24-Inch Professional Dishwasher has a five-stage filtration system that ensures spot-free dishes, and Gaggenau’s DF261 24-Inch Power Dishwasher is packed with tech features, such as an aqua sensor that controls the use of fresh water without compromising the rinse results, and a Power-Light that provides an external visual indication that the program is coming to an end. The light goes out when the program is completed. Some models include technology that can sense when dishes are no longer soiled before a full wash cycle is completed, and will move straight to the dry cycle when the dishes are clean.
Cost: Dishwasher prices vary widely, depending on size, materials, technology and features, and more. Be sure to choose a model that is within your budget. With so many excellent options available today, we can help you find a dishwasher within your price range that will match both your needs and your kitchen.
The staff at Atherton Appliance & Kitchens and BSC Culinary will be happy to discuss your dishwasher options in person. Stop by our showrooms anytime to check out the models we have on display, and to discuss what else we can offer.
