Born in Evanston, Carolyn Morris felt the call to serve her nation during her first week of college on September 11, 2001. Within the year, she had enlisted in the United States Marine Corps as a Combat Engineer. Stationed in Iraq at Balad Air Force Base (a.k.a., Camp Anaconda), she served as a Company Clerk and as a bridge builder. She was awarded the Navy Achievement Medal for her actions during a 24-hour bridge build and a Combat Action Ribbon.
Following deployment, Carolyn returned to the United States and filled a variety of clerical and administrative positions in the Marine Corps. After attending the Defense Language Institute in Monterey, California, she was reassigned as a Pashto Cryptologic Linguist overseeing a team of military and civilian linguists.
While transitioning to civilian life, Carolyn and her family relocated to Champaign, Illinois. She joined a Combat Engineer Reserve Marine unit in Peoria. She served, initially, as a platoon Sergeant to a platoon of forty Marines and later as the Company’s Future Operations Chief, for a company of 140 Marines. Carolyn also founded and continues to oversee a 501c-3 charity called “His Kid’s Closet.” The organization accepts donated clothing and redistributes it for free, or low cost, primarily from the Public Health Department to clients in need.
Carolyn and her family settled in DeKalb in 2015. After years of military service, and time at home raising children, she is able to return to school to finish her Bachelor of Arts in Economics at Northern Illinois University. With her commitment to her family, her strong belief in public service, and her dedication to excellence, she has continued to be an active volunteer for the community through her Parent Teacher Association and her church.
