Did you know the average person gives off 1 pint of perspiration during an 8-hour sleep? Strangely, though, many of us don’t swap out our bedding when the seasons change, which means there’s a lot of unnecessary tossing and turning that’s happening out there. If you haven’t done so yet, ditch those winter-cozy flannels, and check out these tips for choosing the best sheets to keep you cool and comfortable. And while you’re at it, make sure you have a good mattress cover to protect your investment from stains resulting from heavy perspiration.
Choose Natural Fibers
Fabrics made from 100% natural fibers are the most breathable and will wick away perspiration, keeping you cool and dry throughout the night. Consider silk, cotton and cotton blends including percale, sateen and jersey when choosing summer sheets.
Silk sheets regulate temperature well, staying cool in the summer and warm in the winter, and feel great on the skin. However, silk can be a bit pricey.
Cotton or cotton blends are affordable, comfortable and durable. The best quality cotton sheets are made from Egyptian cotton, which describes the smooth yarns they’re woven from. While most cotton sheets are percale (a type of weave), sateen and jersey are great options as well. With sateen sheets, double check that the sheets are 100% cotton, as they can contain rayon.
Consider The Weight
Although silk and sateen sheets are light in weight, the way they drape the body can cause them to be insulating and trap heat. While percale sheets are heavier and crisper, this may be preferable in the summer months as they allow for more circulation.
Thread Count Counts
Thread count, listed on the label, is an excellent gauge for determining the comfort factor of a sheet set. The count refers to the number of threads per square inch in the weave. The higher the thread count, the better the sheets will feel. Generally, good sheets start with a thread count around 250. We suggest choosing a sheet set with a 300-400 thread count for the summer.
Pick A Light Color
For the summer months, choose light colored sheets that reflect light that comes through the bedroom window versus darker colors that absorb it. White or light colored sheets are easy to bleach as well. But remember when laundering your sheets use lukewarm water and avoid drying on high heat to keep them in the best condition.
