Have you ever hiked through the woods, cooked over a camp fire, made it to the top of a rock wall, hit a bullseye on an archery range, navigated your own kayak on a river or snowshoed through fresh fallen snow? These activities are examples of group sessions at Adventure Works– a local, non-profit interactive counseling agency for youth. Led by professional counselors, these weekly group sessions are at the base of their mission: to assist youth in overcoming challenges and becoming healthy adults through adventure-based counseling.
Adventure Works is a non-profit, interactive counseling agency that serves youth ages 6-18 providing individual, family and group therapy through adventure. A proven alternative to talk therapy, services are provided year-round, primarily outdoors, utilizing the natural environment to engage their clients behaviorally, emotionally and physically. Founded in 2010, Adventure Works’ mission is to assist youth in overcoming challenges and becoming healthy adults through adventure-based counseling.
Adventure Works kicked-off their annual fundraising campaign on December 2nd and hopes the make it the biggest season of giving yet.
Executive Director and co-founder, Lynette Spencer says, “Last year, we served more than 150 youth, and this year we expect even larger numbers. We’re asking our friends and neighbors to give the gift of wellness to a young person in our community by including us in their year-end giving plans.”
Donations will be used to support programs, provide transportation, nutritional support and ultimately bridge the financial gap between the cost of the program and what most families are able to afford.
“I know adventure therapy works, Spencer says. My co-founder, Lesly Wicks, is also a strong advocate. We both witnessed the benefits first-hand in the kids residing at Hope Haven–our very first Adventure Works group. We wanted to make the benefits of this proven form of therapy affordable and accessible to all youth, regardless of their economic status.”
