The Vanishing Half by Brit Bennett is the November book club choice. Weaving together multiple strands and generations of this family, from the Deep South to California, from the 1950s to the 1990s, Brit Bennett produces a story that is at once a riveting, emotional family story and a brilliant exploration of the American history of passing. The Vignes twin sisters will always be identical. But after growing up together in a small, southern black community and running away at age sixteen, it’s not just the shape of their daily lives that is different as adults, it’s everything: their families, their communities, their racial identities. Ten years later, one sister lives with her black daughter in the same southern town she once tried to escape. The other secretly passes for white, and her white husband knows nothing of her past. Still, even separated by so many miles and just as many lies, the fates of the twins remain intertwined. What will happen to the next generation, when their own daughters’ storylines intersect? Copies of the book will be available in the library one month before the program. The e-book and e-audiobook are available with the boundless by Baker & Taylor or Libby by Overdrive apps. This book club is intended for adults. No registration is required. For additional information, please contact Susan at susang@dkpl.org or at (815) 756-9568 ext. 2114.

Join us for First Chapter Friday—a relaxing, welcoming space where adults of all abilities and ages can enjoy the magic of storytelling. Each session features a reading of the first chapter (or about 30 minutes) of a book that might be off your radar. Think of it as story time—but just for adults! After the reading, we’ll have a guided discussion based on a set of thoughtful questions to spark conversation and reflection. If you’re intrigued by the story and want to keep reading, several copies of the book will be available for checkout after the program. Registration is not required. This program is intended for adults. For additional information, please contact Amy at amyf@dkpl.org or call (815) 756-9568 ext. 2150.
