Reading Colors Your World! Summer Reading Kick-off
Time: 10:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.

Place: DeKalb Public Library, Main Lobby
Register on the first day of summer reading and Color Your World! Resource Bank will be in the lobby to distribute bookmarks and treats between 10:00 and 1:00 p.m. Children may then collect a clock sheet to track their reading, and they will be set to earn reading rewards and enjoy a summer of reading and other colorful activities at the library. Teens and adults may also register for summer reading beginning June 2. Summer reading is free and open to all. Teen Bingo

Books are for everyone, even our littlest library patrons! Our Book Babies program is aimed at children ages 0-36 months, although older children are welcome to attend. We will sing lots of simple and interactive songs, do finger plays and rhymes, practice sign language, and read an easy book. All of these activities are great for babies’ developing brains. It’s all aboard for a trip on Conductor Cody’s Reading Railroad! How does Conductor Cody know so much about trains and magic tricks? He reads at his local library! On this magical railway adventure, we’ll learn how to use your local library, why you should, and how non-fiction reading can be just as much fun as fiction reading. Once we’re back at the station, you’ll want to book another train ticket back to your local library! Best for children aged 3-8 with their families. Professional magician and autistic self-advocate Cody Clark combines his lived experiences as a magician, arts patron, and autistic adult to create a special show, tailored specifically for patrons ages with special sensory needs, though anyone is welcome to attend. Memory Café: Backyard Birds

Memory Cafés provide a safe place for those experiencing memory loss and their care partners to socialize and have fun with others in similar situations. During these informal gatherings, guests are invited to settle in with coffee, or tea, and snacks to hear about a featured free resource. Then it’s time for a “get to know you” question and singalong with a familiar song. Next, we’ll enjoy a presentation, play games, do crafts, or share photo cards to spark memories and conversation. Then we’ll close the program with another short singalong. At each Café there will be a table with free resources and giveaways, along with books to check out, and a brain-stimulating “to go” activity to take home. Looking to add a new plant or two to your home? Stop by our Plant Adopt or Swap Program, sponsored by Willrett Flower Company. Participants can bring in a plant or plant cutting and swap it for a new plant. If you don’t have any plants to swap, you can still stop by and adopt a new plant. There will be a designated plant swap area for those who would like to trade plants with other plant enthusiasts. There will also be a designated plant adoption area for plants that are available for anyone to take. Houseplants of all kinds are welcome, but please only bring pots that you are willing to part with.
