Just Energy Group has been granted a Transient Merchant Permit to solicit door to door in rural DeKalb County. They have met the legal requirements to receive such a Merchant Permit for Unincorportated DeKalb County.
However Sheriff Scott wants to make it clear that such permit does not endorse or validate this company. In fact the following facts can be stated:
Just Energy Group, Inc., according to the Better Business Bureau (BBB.org) is not accredited with the BBB. The BBB has given the company a rating of ‘C’ due to the government actions(s) against the business and the business has failed to resolve underlying cause(s) of a pattern of complaints.
There has been 553 complaints against this company to the BBB including 117 complaints in the last 12 months. There have been thousands of complaints to the Citizen’s Utility Board.
Examples of alleged infractions include:
- Omitting prescribed contract requirements
- Failing to disclose fees to consumers
- Providing false or misleading statements
- Sales agents not clearly identifying themselves to consumers; as well as
- Failing to provide a business card.
Just Energy Group, Inc. is a Canadian based natural gas and electricity retailer operating in Canadian and American Markets across North America and the United Kingdom.
The permit issued by the Sheriff in accordance with County Ordinance, applies only to unincorporated areas. In order for this company to solicit in various incorporated areas they must meet the requirements of the appropriate jurisdictin and State law.
Under the County Ordinance any individual with Transient Merchant permit can not solicit, or go upon any property for the purpose oof soliciting or related activity between the hours of 7:00pm and 9:00 am.
Citizens experiencing difficulty with Just Energy solicitors should contact their local police department.

They pull this scam in Chicago do not fall for it! And do not open your door for anyone without knowing.or expecting them.

Just so people know, there are legit 3rd party suppliers that you can enroll with so you don’t pay com eds high rates. The company I work for has a lower rate,no hidden fees and charges and no cancellation fees. Educate yourself on deregulation and don’t base your decision on horror stories from a friend of a friend.not all companies are like this one.as an energy consultant I can’t begin to tell you how frustrating it is to try and help people that are not informed.

It’s hard to get rid of them because they do a good job. Easier to say, “No thank you” and close the door.

I make signs for such!!! ð

Not familiar with DeKalb County’s ordinance, but in general, governmental entities are pretty limited in their power to deny solicitation permits–freedom of speech issues, even for commercial businesses. Best bet is to post a no solicitation sticker on your front door and send them on their way.

I ‘used’ to know someone who worked as a sales rep for this company. He used to express to us how it is such a scam but he didn’t care because he was taking home thousands of dollars per week. It is also a pyramid scheme, where you have to recruit others to become sales reps too and you get a percentage of their sales (residual income). When they burn out one area, they will move onto the next. The worst part of these types of companies is when they make deals within the City Hall. When I lived in Elburn, they were coaxed into believing this Companyâs nonsense and signed a 1-year contract with them that all of their residences will be required to use their services. However, they stated it would be at a better rate, yet they failed to mention all of the additional fees and misc. taxes that they added on top of it. It was much higher than what people were initially paying for the same service they were already receiving and the entire town had no choice but to continue with the service until the contract expired! When these people approach me, I just tell them that I know someone who works for them and I am not interested in anything they have to say to me. Sorry for the novel, but knowledge is power…

These guys have been going around for a long time, my late husband fell for their bs, and he’s been gone for 4 yrs now. Its like a cell phone contact. You get slammed with fees for eveything, then you have to pay them 150.00 to get out of the contract. Just slam the door in their face!

Just an educated guess, but, I’m thinking they did all they needed to qualify to solicit in just Unincorporated DeKalb Co. so he had no choice but to approve. Then he sent this warning out to let us all know. Thanks DeKalb County Dekalb County Sheriff’s Office, Illinois, for warning us!

My thoughts exactly Dorothy.

So why are they getting a permit?

Nice!
