On Sunday, August 16th 2015, Governor Rauner signed Illinois Senate Bill 107 which re-vamps the current Disabled Veterans Property Tax Exemption in Illinois (35 ILCS 200/15-169). If you are receiving a Service Connected Disability of 30% or more from the Department of Veterans Affairs, the new Property Tax Exemption pertains to you. Beginning with the taxable year 2015, property tax payments in 2016 will qualify for the exemptions. (Prior to 01/01/2015 – Old Exemptions Apply). You must apply each year to receive this Property Tax Exemption.
If you are:
Honorably Discharged (ONLY) from U.S. Armed Forces, and
- Receiving Service Connected Disability from the VA of 30% or more, and
- Illinois is your primary residence and you are responsible for the property taxes, or
- You are a Surviving Spouse who has been receiving DVSHE
Percent of Disability Exemption you could be eligible for:
30% – 50% $2,500 Exemption off the Assessed Value of Primary Residence
50% – 70% $5,000 Exemption off the Assessed Value of Primary Residence
70% – 100% 100% Exemption off the Assessed Value of Primary Residence
Application Requirements:
1. DeKalb County Application/Renewal for Disabled Veterans’ Standard Homestead Exemption
2. Copy of your DD 214 or similar Armed Forces of the U.S. Report of Honorable Discharge
3. Current Department of Veterans’ Affairs Awardance Letter
4. Current Illinois Drivers’ License or ID Card showing primary residence address
5. Property Identification Number (PIN) of your primary residence
