KishHealth System Hospice is offering its next volunteer orientation and training class on Wednesdays, March 18 through April 22, from 9 am to noon, at the KishHealth System Hospice office at 2727 Sycamore Rd., DeKalb. The class is open to all individuals interested in becoming direct care volunteers for KishHealth System Hospice and those who simply want to learn more about Hospice.
Direct care volunteers are an integral part of an interdisciplinary team serving terminally ill individuals and their families. The goal of the team is to help each person enjoy the best quality of life possible. Important characteristics of direct care volunteers include compassion, flexibility, ability to listen, desire to make a difference and enrich the lives of others.
The class will provide an overview of the history and philosophy of hospice, as well as help class members learn how to respond to the social, emotional and spiritual needs of the terminally ill and their families. Additionally, class members will receive guidance and support while exploring issues involved in the dying and grieving processes.
A registration fee of $20 helps cover the cost of materials. Scholarships are available. Advance registration by Friday, March 13 is necessary. To register or for further information, call Sue A. Goudy, Volunteer/Transitions coordinator, at 815.756.3000. For more information about KishHealth System Hospice, visit www.kishhealth.org.
