The DeKalb County Farm Bureau and the DeKalb Area Agricultural Heritage Association have been busy dedicating historical markers at the scenes of important local agricultural sites in DeKalb County. The location of the first DEKALB Hybrid corn breeding plot was dedicated with a marker on September 8th in rural DeKalb. The second historical marker commemorates the formation of the Farm Bureau organization (in 1912), the first Farm Bureau to organize in Illinois and among the oldest in the U.S, and Farm Bureau’s significance to agriculture and our community.
The third and final marker will be dedicated this coming Saturday, October 11th at the DeKalb home of the first farm adviser, William Eckhardt. Eckhardt was hired by the Farm Bureau organization in 1912 to help farmers improve soil fertility and crop production and advance farming practices.
