DeKalb County Community Gardens Seeking Community Support via Online Voting for a $15,000 Grant
The DeKalb County Community Gardens has had a grant application accepted by Nature’s Path Gardens for Good Grant Program. The grants will be awarded to three organizations out of over 130 applications, that grow accessible, healthy, organic foods to feed the hungry. The Nature’s Path Gardens for Good Grant Program is in its 5th year.
DeKalb County Community Gardens submitted an application explaining how they would use the grant to launch their Garden Paths of Hope Program, as well as purchase a truck for mobile vegetable distribution, a “Veggie Mobile.” DCCG is now asking the community for support through the public voting phase on Facebook at: Nature Path Contest and scroll through until you see ‘DCCG Garden Paths of Hope ‘.
DeKalb County Community Gardens takes an innovative approach to end hunger at the local level through community involvement, education, and commitment to environmental stewardship.
“We are asking supporters of DCCG to vote for us once a day until July 10. This grant will help us to expand and meet more of the need for fresh healthy food now and for generations to come.” Dan Kenney, executive director of DCCG said.
DeKalb County Community Gardens has gardens in over 40 different locations across DeKalb County. DCCG is one of the few efforts in the U.S. that is a county wide effort to provide access to fresh, local, sustainably-grown food for those in need. Working in partnership with school, park, and forest preserve districts, businesses, churches, and municipalities, DCCG is organizing a County wide project to ensure food security for the 5,000 children and 13,000 adults who live with food insecurity, and also create sustainable alternatives to permanently close the food gap.
From now through July 10, visitors will have an opportunity to vote once per day for the organization they feel most deserves a grant based on the organization’s demonstration of how the grant would help it to achieve its goals. After voting closes, the top six organizations with the most votes will move to the final judging phase, after which the grant recipients will be announced on or about August 1.
