Glidden Homestead blacksmith Lucio Bortolin shows children how blacksmiths work with metal and then allows them to give it a try with kid -friendly tools.
Kids of all ages are invited visit Glidden Homestead and Historical Center from noon to 4 p.m. this Sunday, June 22nd, 2014, for Kids Day at the Barn. This program is among a number of special events during the homestead’s “Year of the Barn,” highlighting the historic brick barn on the homestead’s site at 921 W. Lincoln Highway. Both the home and barn are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Throughout the day, families are invited to visit with farm animals like a horse, cow, goat, rabbits and more, thanks to the Malta Mustangs 4-H Club, which will host a petting zoo on the homestead grounds. Children are invited to try their hand at blacksmithing using clay and a wooden mallet on a wooden anvil with the help of Blacksmith Club members Jeff Byerhoff and Marty O’Connor. They also will demonstrate their craft in the Phineas Vaughan Blacksmith Shop.
Other family-friendly events will include games and activities like horseshoes, drop the clothespin in a milk bottle and mini-golf. The historic 1860s Glidden home will be open for tours, with children taking part in a scavenger hunt. Admission is $4 per adult and free for children younger than 14.
