Breaking it down to local real time home economics I’d have to say KishHealth System is at the very top of the Great Places to Work list for DeKalb County. As you point out their top administrators compare favorably to even NIU. But right on down the list to cleaning service there are peer favorable comparisons in terms of total compensation including benefits.
But health care is expensive. As is education. As is government. Thank goodness we can buy from the $1 Menu at Mickey-D’s, ehhh Stephen? The prevailing notion among any Best Places to Work list is, all together now, if you want a quality workforce you’ve got to pay for it.
The conundrum is no one will pay for that standard of quality out of their own wallet if they can help it.

One last thing Kishwaukee Health System pays their CEO twice what they pay in property taxes. This shows just how broken our tax system is. We have tax breaks for not for profits but no controls over executive pay. These organizations can masquerade as charities and even solicite people to put them in their wills. Make no mistake there is no comparison with these organizations and the Salvation Army.

I have to wonder who nominated Kishwaukee Health Systems as a great place to work? Was it an administrator at Kish? I wonder if this Becker Hospital Review actually interviewed any of the employees? Workers there seem to lack basic rights in the workplace without union representation. Kish has forced workers to retire for no apparent reason. They make working there so bad that some quit. One that I know of hired a lawyer and received significant compensation because of the heavy handed behavior of the employer.

It certainly is a great place for it’s top executives to work. As the top two make nearly a million dollars per year. I don’t know what their many vice presidents are paid. As Kish has taken over the home health care nursing business in the country it hasn’t been as profitable for the nurses.

I have contacted this Becker Hospital Review and they apparently make these awards without actually interviewing the employees at these “great places to work.” So this award means practically nothing in reality.
