The Elks National Hoop Shoot is a free throw contest for youth ages 8 – 13. Locally, the Elks Hoop Shoot will be held this Sunday, January 13th, from 1-4pm at the DeKalb Park District’s Sports and Rec Center, 1765 S 4th St, in DeKalb. The program is free to all participants and provides youth an opportunity to compete, connect and succeed through hard work and healthy competition. Winners advance through local, district, state and regional contests to reach the National Finals in Springfield, Mass. In the end, the names of six national champions will be permanently inscribed at the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.
The Elks Club National Hoop Shoot is open to everyone, both members and non-members of the Elks Club. It is recommended to RSVP on the Elks Facebook Event page, as there will be a pizza party back at the DeKalb Elks for the participants after the contest is over.
Age Requirements:
1. The Elks Hoop Shoot is open to all boys and girls, ages 8 -13. Contestants will be assigned an age-group based on the age that they will be on April 1, 2013.
2. There are two divisions, boys and girls, and three age categories in each division: Boys 8-9, Boys 10-11, Boys 12-13, Girls 8-9, Girls 10-11, Girls 12-13
3. Contestants must be 8 years old by April 1, 2013, to participate. Contestants under this age limit are ineligible to compete.
Contest Rules:
1. Boys and girls in the 8-9 age group may shoot four feet in front of the regulation foul line.
2. All contestants should be given the opportunity to warm up.
3. Each contestant should be given warm up shots, if desired, before shooting for score. The number of shots for score is left to the discretion of the contest director. However, it is recommended that at least five shots are offered.
4. Contestants cannot bounce the ball more than 4 times. If this happens, the shot is void.
5. A free throw begins when the ball is given to the contestant at the free throw line. It ends when the try is successful, when it is certain that the try will be unsuccessful, or when the ball becomes dead.
6. The contestant must stay behind the foul line until the ball has touched the hoop, backboard or net. If the line is touched before this happens, a penalty occurs and the shot is void.
7. Ties will be broken by taking additional shots in the same shooting order until the winner is determined.
