Civil War Historian Dennis Maher returns to host a Sycamore History Museum talk about Lincoln’s early life this Wednesday, December 3rd, 2014 at 7pm. Abraham Lincoln is etched into the American psyche as a monument of American freedom. In the shadows of Mt. Rushmore and the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, the American people have grown to admire and love this man. In reality, he was no different than most people. He had friends, business associates and of course family. How did Lincoln relate to these very important people in his life? Maher talks about these relationships and reflects on how Lincoln’s character development compared to others during this time period.
When Maher is not teaching, he is working in the community. He belongs to the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War. E.F. Dutton Camp #49, Sycamore-Illinois, and is Historian and Secretary in addition to working on preserving gravesites and Civil War memorials. He was a former member of the Educational Advisory Panel-Abraham Lincoln Library and Museum, Springfield, Il.
This talk is the third and final in the series of evening Civil War programs connected to the Sycamore History Museum’s exhibit, “General Dutton’s America.” The presentation will be held at the DeKalb County Community Foundation’s Freight Room, 475 DeKalb Ave. in Sycamore. There is a $5 suggested donation. Visit the Sycamore History Museum’s website to learn more.
