Thursday at 6pm January 23rd the City of Sycamore is conducting the first of two public meetings to begin the process of updating the city’s comprehensive plan. Another meeting is scheduled for 10am Saturday January 25th.
Sycamore appears to be taking the direct course in that process. City Manager Brian Gregory is hosting and facilitating the meetings and Mayor Ken Mundy is beating the bushes to make all citizens, resident and corporate, aware that the comprehensive plan is under review. Participation is invited.
While Mundy urges anyone who works or lives in Sycamore to attend the meetings and ask questions or offer suggestions citizens should not expect a hurried process. Any changes to the plan will be reviewed by the Planning Commission before it is considered for adoption by the City Council.
The entire community is considered a stakeholder in the comprehensive plan and the future of Sycamore. The city’s comprehensive plan was last updated in 2008 when residential new construction was near its peak before the recession.
Projected growth was reflected on the 2008 and prior land use maps but much of that development never materialized. An update is needed.
A well designed comprehensive plan addresses safety, land use, traffic patterns, economic development and the property tax base.
Sycamore’s opportunity to plan a successful and enjoyable community is at hand and citizen participation is crucial. Hopefully the township, school and park districts, library and county units of governments also participate.
That’s the best way to make sure on one is left holding their nose after all is said and done.
