The Undergraduate Special Opportunities in Artistry and Research (USOAR) program funds student-generated research projects, whether the study is conducted on campus, somewhere else in the United States or internationally. USOAR is open to students from all colleges, departments and majors.
Students of diverse backgrounds, including underrepresented minority students, students from economically disadvantaged and underserved backgrounds and students with disabilities, are strongly encouraged to apply.
How to get involved
Share your idea for a research or artistry project with a faculty member. Once the faculty member has approved your idea, complete and submit a copy of your proposal to ugresearch@niu.edu. The spring deadline for submissions is Friday, Feb. 6.

Students whose proposals are selected could be granted up to $2,500 each to carry out their projects. Students have between Jan. 1 and Dec. 31 to complete their USOAR projects. The USOAR grant covers expenses related to research related travel, conference travel and materials needed to conduct the project.
During the 2014-15 academic year, USOAR participants conducted projects across many disciplines including biological sciences, athletic training, history, physics, illustration and kinesiology.
Among those scholars was history major Karissa Kessen, who worked with faculty sponsor J.D. Bowers on her project, “Violence, Memory and Commemoration: Representations of Genocide in South American Memorial Museums.”
