This Saturday, November 10th, is NIU’s newest fall semester campus-wide service event. Rake Across DeKalb sends volunteers from the NIU community (students, faculty, and staff) into the community to assist area residents with lawn clean-up in preparation for winter. Participation is free for both volunteers and those residents wishing to add to the list of project sites.
Check-in will begin at 8:00 am in the Diversions Lounge of the Holmes Student Center. There, volunteers will receive their assignments as well as any supplies they might need. A state-issued ID (ie. driver’s license) will be needed to receive supplies. Supplies can be dropped off in the Diversions Lounge following the event.
Residents whose homes are selected are expected to provide at least one rake per volunteer requested. Student volunteers will be at project sites between 10:00 am and 1:00 pm. Volunteers may be available to assist with additional outdoor tasks (ie. mulching, painting, gathering firewood, etc. if approved prior to the event.
The Rake Across DeKalb coordinators are anticipating a high level of participation for this inaugural event. Supplies will be needed to ensure all of the area residents can receive the assistance they need. How can you help? They are especially in need of rakes (plastic or aluminum), work gloves, lawn & leaf bags, and heavy-duty trash bags. Donations (new or lightly-used) can be dropped off at room 150 of the Campus Life Building at NIU. If you need to make arrangements for pick-up of supplies, please call 815-753-6511. The organizers appreciate your support of this ‘communiversity’ effort. Click here for more information.
