Demolition is now underway on a home in the 200 block of Oak Street be torn down to make way for a parking lot, which will be used by the DeKalb Public Library and Ronan-Moore-Finch Funeral Home.
Two other homes, one on each side of this, will be torn down in the coming weeks for the parking lot as well.

Oops.
Mary Jane (SMOKIN!) has enlightened me that she thinks the city paid $1.45 for FIVE locations- so as Herb (Bachmann) Cain would point out, I am short a couple of apples, or maybe one apple and an orange.
(for further clarification go to mah NINE NINE NINE website and read the analysis we paid somebody to do).
Somebody else can take a crack at this if they have a bigger picture of the fruit bowl involved.
Thanks again Mr. Haish, too bad they took your name off the building.
my man, Maynard…
The city hasn’t paid $1.45 million yet, I mean, assuming this ain’t a done deal.
But since we are playing with numbers here I got some 2010 tax bill (payable in 2011) info to help us sort this all out:

1. 0823153006
315 N 3RD ST
$4556.68
2. 0823153007
Funeral Home Parking Lot (existing)
$1863.96
3. 0823156010
227 N 3RD ST
$3772.36
4. 0823156009
218 OAK ST
$3133.78
5. 0823156002
214 OAK ST
$3956.1
6. 0823156001
232 N 2ND ST
$6609.72
I think properties 3 and 4 on the map are to be converted to a new parking lot for the funeral home so they won’t be completely removed from the tax rolls but comparing them to property 2, the current parking lot, one might expect to see a bit of a drop in property taxes.
And then, if the remaining properties were to convert from private-property-tax-paying to public-non-tax-paying we might expect to lose about $16976.46 per year.
That’s a lot of iPads!

Thanks Gracie. I probably missed this analysis somewhere else as I quit reading the DC Libarary soap.
Did anybody do the total math on the cost of the Parking Lot -Demo plus lost property taxes on
3 homes? (I’m not a City Manger expert so just guessing here).
S0 Home Values let’s call it Three houses at @120k = $360k
Three House Demo/Engineer-Analysis/Mangement/ etc etc $100k
Put up a parking lot blacktop/eqpt/architect/Mangement….$250k?
Conservative $3350 prop tax per house = $10k lost ANNUALLY FOREVER, (unless the Funeral Home is picking some of that up.)
$360k 3 houses + 100K demo + $250k blacktop = $710k plus $10k in lost property tax annually FOREVER.
And THAT might be the cheapest way to “Put up a Parking Lot h/t Joni Mitchell. Didn’t the brick one cost $1 mil?
Looks like the Haish Memorial Library just might make that 100 years in 2031? (and by then it will be all Ipads:)
