Have you bought a home in the last year? If you have, do you know who is paying your DeKalb County property taxes? Christine J. Johnson, DeKalb County Treasurer, would like to remind new homeowners to check to see if they are responsible for any real estate taxes this year. “Each year we have a number of new homeowners who aren’t aware that they are responsible for taxes due on their home this year.”

Johnson suggests new homeowners check their real estate closing documents, or with their title company or attorney, to see if they owe property taxes due this year. If they find that they do, Johnson recommends that they contact her office for a duplicate bill. “Each year we have a number of new homeowners who aren’t aware that they are responsible for taxes due on their home this year. They receive an allowance against the purchase price of their home at the time of closing, but don’t realize they are liable for 2016 taxes due in 2017.” By acting quickly new homeowners can avoid delinquent taxes and penalties. “My office will be glad to assist any homeowners with questions about their real estate taxes, or to provide them with a duplicate bill.”
