On 8/14/14, DeKalb Police Officers responded to a report of drug activity in the 800 block of Regent Dr. The caller gave detailed information about the suspected drug activity and officers were able to locate approximately four grams of crack-cocaine and a firearm inside the suspect vehicle.
Officers spoke with the vehicle owner and learned that she and her estranged husband are in the middle of a contentious divorce. The vehicle owner believed that the suspect planted the drugs and gun in her car to discredit her in the divorce proceedings.
After several weeks of the multi-agency investigation, officers learned that the suspect, Nicholas Krengiel, paid an associate to acquire a gun and drugs. Krengiel gave explicit instructions on how and when to plant the evidence in the vehicle and then to call the DeKalb Police Department. Krengiel also gave the associate the keys to the vehicle and directions to the home.
On 10/1/14, the DeKalb Police Department observed Krengiel and the associate meeting. Subsequent to that meeting, Krengiel was stopped and later arrested. Nicholas Krengiel’s bond was set at $250,000. The police agencies involved in this investigation include the DeKalb Police Department, DeKalb County Sheriff’s Department, Rockford Police Department, and the Drug Enforcement Administration Task Force.
