A win tonight will give the NIU Huskies the recognition they’ve earned. A team two points short of a perfect season and one win away from capturing their third consecutive MAC West title deserves enough love from the pollsters for a top 25 ranking.
Expect the dogs to be barking at Huskie Stadium for the 8pm kick-off. The game will be televised on ESPN2 but real fans wear blankets, sit in the cozy seats and howl at the moon.
This is the big game of the season to date and the arch rival Rockets from Toledo were ranked 25 in the nation before they were upset by Ball State, who the Huskies defeated 35-23 on October 6 behind an almost typical 405 yard performance by QB Jordan Lynch.
Lynch has put together a season worthy of Heisman Trophy mention. All he’s done is throw for over 2,100 yards, run for 1,342 yards and account for 35 touchdowns. Senior WRs Martel Moore and Perez Alford will likely shine tonight but fans will also get a look at the immediate future. TommyLee Harris (So.) has already established himself as a big play receiver. Watch for Juwan Brescacin (Fr). He’s blossoming as a receiver very similar to Brandon Marshall.
Toledo has several weapons at their disposal. RB David Fluellen is 2nd in the nation in rushing with 1,381 yards and at 6’0 and 215 pounds he’s a punishing runner who fights for every yard. Terrance Owens is behind the center and has thrown for over 2,400 yards. But his completion percentage has dwindled in his last three games as opponents have turned up the heat. Owens has been sacked 15 times this season but he takes care of the ball, throwing only 5 interceptions.
