Grant Opportunities for Local Music Programs are now available through the Farny R. Wurlitzer Foundation Fund at the DeKalb County Community Foundation (DCCF). Grant applicants must be a 501(c)3 nonprofit or educational organization promoting music or music education.
The Wurlitzer Company, established in 1856 and closed in the mid 1980’s, was an international piano and organ manufacturer with headquarters in DeKalb, Illinois. Farny R. Wurlitzer and his wife established the Farny R. Wurlitzer Foundation in 1940 to further music education and performance around the Midwest. In 2012, the Wurlitzer Foundation Board of Directors converted its operations to a donor advised fund at the DeKalb County Community Foundation.

Saavana Robles, KishHealth System Hospice volunteer, and Jen Conley, Hospice Music Thereapist/Counselor try out new drums and percussion instruments purchased through a Farny R. Wurlitzer Foundation Fund grant in 2013. The drums are being used with the Hospice children’s bereavement group, “Healing Beats” caregiver support group and individually with Hospice patients and families. During 2013, $225,000 in Wurlitzer Foundation Fund grants were distributed throughout the Midwest, including $8,000 to DeKalb County organizations.
Grant requests will be accepted through March 31, 2014 and will be reviewed by the Farny R. Wurlitzer Foundation Fund Board of Advisors. Contact George Buck, Fund Advisors Chair, for more information.
