Glenbard North Boys Wrestling Wins 2011 Team State Championship

Glenbard North Boys Wrestling 2011
When the chants of “Let’s go, Paul! Let’s go, Paul!” floated down from the Glenbard North cheering section to the U.S. Cellular Coliseum floor Saturday night, Paul Freeman knew what he had to do.
Give Panthers coach Mark Hahn the one piece of hardware he hadn’t brought home in 24 seasons: a championship trophy.
“That fired me up a lot,” Freeman said after holding on for a 2-1 win at 171 pounds that clinched Glenbard North’s 31-24 victory over defending champ Minooka in the Class 3A title match.
“He’s taken third I don’t know how many times,” Freeman said of Hahn, who had five thirds and two runner-up finishes since 2000. “We had to win one for him.”

GNB Claims 1st Team State Championship
The Panthers (25-4) got that elusive title for Hahn the hard way. Glenbard North, ranked second by lllinois Best Weekly, beat No. 4 Lyons 36-28 in the quarterfinals and then avenged its only in-state loss this season by knocking off No. 1 Sandburg 28-25 in the semifinals.
“We knew we had the hard road,” Hahn said. “We knew we could go 3-0 or we could go [0-1] and go home.”
But Freeman and the rest of the Panthers made sure they came away with the best-case scenario rather than the worst.
In a match that began at 215 pounds, Glenbard North opened with falls by Zac Durkee and 285-pounder Dan Buyle to go ahead 12-0. Jon Marmolejo won 7-2 at 103 to push the lead to 15-0 and Minooka (25-4) didn’t get closer than 11 until a anticlimactic forfeit in the last bout.

Brayan Gonzalez Wins 116lb
“Durkee and Buyle, if you would have thought that four years ago when they were freshmen that they would be wrestling here, those two guys, you wouldn’t believe it,” Hahn said.
They weren’t the only heroes for the Panthers. Joey Gosinski, who edged Minooka’s Bobby Zabel in overtime en route to winning the 3A 130-pound title last week, beat Zabel 9-3 this time around.
State placers Bryan Gonzalez (119) and Brian Murphy (140) also won, with Murphy delivering a 22-8 major decision against Leo Ruettiger in another state tourney rematch. Mario Rodriguez’s decision at 145 made it 28-10 and Freeman clinched the win two bouts later.

Danny Eldrige goes 2 – 0 At State
“We had some great performances,” Hahn said. “Danny Eldridge [who didn’t wrestle vs. Minooka] and Bryan Gonzalez were all banged up. They came thrugh and wrestled tough throughout the tournament.”
Sandburg (28-4) settled for third place, beating Harlem 35-13. Harlem won 34-32 in the quarterfinals over Lane, which was bidding to become the first Public League team to win a trophy since 2000. Indians star Max Schneider, limited to two matches since Dec. 30 because of a left shoulder injury, returned to action and had a 2:55 fall at 152.
