Wondering where to find local food and farm products in DeKalb County? Satisfy your local food cravings and curiosities on the DeKalb County Farm Stroll this Sunday, July 24th, 2016 ! Grab the family and plan to go on this self-guided tour of more than a dozen local, diversified family farms. This year’s Farm Stroll will be held from 12:00pm to 5:00pm. Discover at your own pace, a diverse mix of small family farms producing food, fiber and fun right here in DeKalb County, Illinois all opening their doors for tours on the same day!

A few of the special events going on Sunday at the farms are listed below:
- Charter Grove Honey Farm will be doing a “Bee Talk” at the You Pick Berries farm at 2:00pm and 4:00pm. The presentation will be led by Tom Montavon who has been keeping bees on his family farm for a decade, and had 50+ hives around four counties. He produces honey for farmers markets and craft shows, and also raises queens. Honey tasting and sales will be available. - Red Home Farm is a diversified livestock farm and learning center. They are joining us in this years farms stroll. Bryan and Sarah Flower raiser miniature cattle, hogs, goats, chickens and bees. Bryan teaches butchering, sausage-making, grilling, and traditional farm-to-table cooking. Sample milk from their goats and cows. Tours ongoing throughout the afternoon. - DeKalb Area Agricultural Heritage Association (DAAHA) is a museum sharing the impacts of historical agricultural innovations. Explore their special collection of antique farming equipment housed at Waterman Winery including corn shellers, a Tower corn planter and an animal treadmill for power. Family friendly hands-on corn activities are available all afternoon. Stop by and see them at Waterman Winery.http://www.daaha.org/
- Stop by Waterman Winery and Vineyards during this years farm stroll. Tour their antique barn with fermenting tanks, and their newer shop with wine and farm equipment. While visiting, sample some of their award winning wine grown, fermented, and bottled on-site; try 6 wines for $5. - The Farmer’s Garden will once again be participating in this year’s Farm Stroll. Farmer Wayne’s small-scale fruit & vegetable enterprise is driven by soil stewardship and Community-Supported Agriculture. Tour the greenhouse and gardens while visiting. Meet a soil biologist and enjoy grilled vegetables, cold drinks, and other goodies under the tent. There will be vintage tractors and equipment demos along with a petting corral for the kids. - Emily and Claire Plapp milk small-framed, high-producing Jersey and Guernsey cows that graze on pasture and receive organic oats and hay. Together they make up Precious Pastures located in Rochelle. Stop by their farm where you will find unpasteurized, non-homogenized milk for sale right on the farm, but you must bring your own container. Milking begins at 5:00pm. - Whiskey Acres Distilling Company will be open from 1:30-5:30 during the Farm Stroll. Here you will find fine spirits handcrafted by fifth-generation farmers from grains that are grown on-site. Farm and distillery tours begin every hour on the hour, with the last one at 4:00pm. $10 for a tour and a tasting. - Theis Farm Market provides farm-fresh produce on a multi-generation family farm with a working windmill and authentic outhouse. While visiting their farm, you can expect to find sweet corn, green beans, summer squash, raspberries, and dozens of varieties of field-grown tomatoes. Tour the farm and fields during the farm stroll and meet the pollinators in their flowers and try fresh honey from the hives.
