Genoa Main Street, Inc. invites area residents to come take a look or display their handiwork at the third annual Quilt & Needle Arts Walk in downtown Genoa from today through Saturday, January 24-29, 2011. Quilts, embroidery, knitting, weaving, lacework, needlepoint, rugs, handmade dolls and more will be on display throughout downtown. Speakers, demonstrations and hands-on opportunities will keep visitors busy all week.
“There is such a great tradition of needlework in this area,” says Dolores Gallagher, committee chair. “It’s fun to get the quilts and other projects out of the house so everyone can enjoy them.” Anyone who would like to display their work should call or e-mail Genoa Main Street, Inc. Volunteers can pick up and return the items, making it very easy to participate.
A number of activities are planned for the week of the event. These include displays of Quilts of Valor and Home of the Brave quilts, quilt appraisals, demonstrations of weaving, spinning, rug hooking, lace making, tatting, embroidery and more, plus presentations by local artisans Shirley Gylleck and Dorothy Laing.
This year’s featured artist is Lizz Ploppert, known for her creative and unusual creations. Lizz’s “out of the box” presentation of her magical quilts and other items will be held on Saturday, January 29, at 10:30 a.m. Kids also will enjoy a fun filled day on Saturday. Kids Day at the Walk will include hands-on learning experiences, demonstrations and projects to take home. For information on displaying quilts or needlework and a schedule of events, go here or call 815 784-6961.
