GROUPS FREE DINNERS NOT JUST ABOUT FOOD, BUT FELLOWSHIP, SERVICE
“How many will you be dining with this evening?” is becoming a regular question in the vocabulary of Feed’em Soup Community Projects volunteers. Starting on December 22nd at their holiday meal, the group experimented with a Table Service plan for their free community meals. The idea received such positive feedback from guests that it has become the standard for every meal since.
No longer are guests required to stand in a line to receive their food cafeteria style or help themselves at a buffet, but a team of 7 servers take guests orders and bring it to their tables at every meal. “This has been a great step forward for us” acting vice president Derek Gibbs said. “It makes people feel more welcome and we are able to better meet each individuals needs.”
The group has seen huge growth in the new year feeding over 150 people at each meal. The group strives to provide not only food, but top quality service. Over 30 volunteers are used at each meal. Volunteers, including the groups organizers, are asked to perform a wide variety of tasks such as serving food, refilling beverages, running a dessert cart, assisting guests in the food pantry and general clean up after each meal.
Meals are served on the 2nd and 4th Wednesday of each month from 5 – 7pm at the First Lutheran Church of DeKalb, 324 North Third Street in DeKalb. The next meal is this Wednesday, February 9th and they will be serving Chili, Guacamole and Chips, Fruit, Salad and Cornbread. Individuals and groups interested in volunteering can register on the group’s website, or by contacting Carly Brown at volunteer@FeedEmSoup.org.
