University of Illinois Extension is offering a Fall evening nature series for families at the Natural Resource Education Center in Russell Woods Forest Preserve. Families can learn about what goes on in the forest when they aren’t present. They will learn how animals find their way through the darkness, why they come out at night, and much more. Everyone will leave with a new comfort for the outdoors at night. The hour-long program will start indoors and end with a night hike through the woods.
The last in the series, ‘The Coyote’ will be held this Tuesday, December 6th from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.. Come join them for Howl in the Holidays, when they will focus on the notorious coyote. Coyotes are one of the most misunderstood species in Illinois. They conjure up feelings of fear and anger, and for some, wild beauty. There are many stories about coyotes, one of which portrays them as the jokester of the wild. Unfortunately, coyotes get blamed for many things they do and don’t do in our spaces. Come and hear stories and information about this incredible animal and what you can expect from them in your neighborhood.
Presented by Peggy Doty, the University of Illinois Extension Educator for Energy and Environmental Stewardship, this series will be held at Russell Woods Forest Preserve, 11750 State Rt. 72 in Genoa. Please call the Natural Resource Education Center at 815-784-2000 to register your family. There is a $3.00 per person fee to attend. Please dress for the weather and join them for an evening in the woods!
