DeKalb’s annual Loose Leaf Collection Program kicks-off Monday, October 17. Leaves are collected Monday through Friday from 7am to 4pm. Residents should rake leaves into a narrow row parallel to the backside of the curb. Vacuum trucks traveling curbside will pick up the leaves. Leaf piles must be free of debris such as large tree branches and rocks.
Do not rake leaves into the street. Leaves raked into the street can potentially lead to street flooding. The leaves accumulate and prevent storm sewers from functioning properly during rainstorms. We also advise residents not to rake leaves near catch basins, culvert pipes or into ditches, as this may also cause flooding.
Crews will begin leaf collections on the southern perimeter of the City and work north towards West Lincoln Hwy. The following week of October 24th, additional crews will start on the northern City perimeter and work south towards West Lincoln Hwy. Crews do not necessarily collect leaves from both sides of the street on a single pass. Please be patient, if a crew has been down your street but not on your side, they will return to complete your side soon. As the crews converge onto West Lincoln Hwy, residents please be aware, weather is critical to progress, and may cause crews to reschedule or reroute work. In the event of snow, crews discontinue leaf collection until snow plowing is completed.
Waste Management will also pick up your leaves, curbside, on your regularly scheduled garbage day. However, leaves must be placed in biodegradable yard-waste bags or open garbage cans. Leaves placed in plastic bags will not be collected.
Also, for residents’ convenience, landscape waste dumpsters will remain in place through November 30. Plastic bags are strictly prohibited from being placed in the dumpsters.
Landscape waste dumpsters are located at the following locations:
• southeast corner of North 7th Street and Oak Street.
• Fire Station #2 – 1154 South 7th Street.
• City Garden Plots – 950 West Dresser Road
