Zombies will gather at the Holmes Student Center this Saturday at 5pm. According to the Facebook public event page, “the walk is unofficial and is not sponsored by anyone. No one asked if we could do this, it’s just a bunch of people going for a walk. There is no leader. There is no one in charge. This walk is something that we come together as a group to form. If law enforcement or any form of authority for that matter stops you and ask who is in charge, the answer should always be “everyone.” Walking is not illegal!”
The page has 599 people who say they will be attending as of this writing. It also covers the bases of keeping everyone safe and out of trouble as follows:
“Some cities have ran into problems in years past so everyone is encouraged to be conscientious in their actions. For the safety for all involved PLEASE FOLLOW ALL THE FOLLOWING RULES. Anyone not following rules may be subject to fines, lawsuits, and you could just be arrested. (That doesn’t sound fun) So on with the rules.
1. Dress like a zombie and try never to break character!
2. All minors are more than welcome (the young ones can be the creepiest) but should be accompanied by an adult!
3. Use the “haunted house” rule – DO NOT touch anyone. Do not attempt to scare anyone who is not a willing participant. If anyone is freaking out or scared, turn and shamble, limp, or stumble in the opposite direction. Avoid confrontations!
4. Stay on the sidewalk unless crossing the street. When crossing, it’s OK to “break character” and cross quickly. Think fast “New Dawn of the Dead” zombies verses the slower “Old Dawn of the Dead” zombies when crossing the street. Blocking traffic is a crime and anyone doing so could be arrested.
5. No alcohol OR weapons.
6. Do not get blood on ANYTHING. Don’t even drip it on a sidewalk (just in case.) You may however have as much on you as you want!!!! –Getting blood on things could be seen as vandalism
7. No littering, destruction of property, or any other illegal activity. Do not bang on store/car/building windows, most of the time when this is done you get blood on the window (refer back to rule #6) and stay away from automobiles.
8. Have fun!
Now I understand where some of the rules may be a bummer, but this is something we may want to do again and we want to leave a positive impression. Remember, the media may be watching us, so let’s put on a good show!”
The end time of this Walk is when they get back to the starting point however they suggest the Zombies feel free to continue the fun on their own, so keep your eyes out Saturday night DeKalb! Click here to see a route the Zombie Walk will take.

I can’t think of a better way to wrap up NIU Cares Day and Healthy Kids Day than a Zombie Walk! I know I’ll be out there and I encourage my fellow old ladies of DeKalb to represent in the hood!
