DeKalb Mayor Jerry Smith announced today that he will not be seeking reelection next year.
Citing his age and the prospect of being 81 near the end of a second term,Smith said the decision was one that “was right for the Smiths, and for the City of DeKalb.”
Smith was elected to his post in 2017, following a period of retirement during which he said he “wrestled with the decision to place ourselves into an arena where – if successful – we would be answering the call to give back to the community we love so much.”
The mayor has been a resident of DeKalb since 1961 when he came from his native Dixon to attend NIU. Smith spent 30 years in the printing business at Castle-PrinTech, and was the DeKalb County Community Foundation’s Executive Director from 1999-2008.
Smith is a US Army Veteran.
