The DeKalb County Engineer has announced Coltonville Road between West Stonehenge Drive and North First Street remains closed to through traffic with approximately 4 weeks of work remaining for the replacement of the bridge over the South Branch of the Kishwaukee River.
Coltonville Road was closed on August 17, 2015 after an unusually long delay in getting steel beams for the bridge. Although the entire project would not be complete, the road was anticipated to be open to traffic by the end of 2015. However, 17 rain events during the fall and 12” of snow on November 21 caused the Kishwaukee River to remain high and delayed the scheduled work. Freezing temperatures hindered the ability for concrete work during the winter and the contractor resumed work in March, 2016. Because the new bridge is 3 feet higher than the old bridge, a large amount of earthwork and roadwork was required. This work was delayed due to wet conditions many times during the spring. April had 14 days of precipitation and May had 13 days of precipitation including major flooding which lasted several days after the May 13th storm.
Currently, the contractor is scheduled to pave the road and shoulders during the week of June 13. After paving, one week will be needed for bridge deck grooving and sealing and two weeks for guardrail installation, roadway striping, landscaping, and other miscellaneous items. As many of these items are weather dependent, weather will continue to play a part in determining the exact date Coltonville Road will be opened.
