Join us for a fun workshop based on one of the Five Animal Frolics of Qigong! In these workshops, we learn simple, tai chi-like movements based on one of five animals: deer, bear, monkey, tiger, and crane. We also talk about the significance of these animals, and their corresponding seasons (or phases) according to traditional Chinese medicine.
This month, we learn the supple movements of the deer, discuss the element of water, and learn what sorts of things nature shows us through the fall season.
The easy-to-learn movements incorporate breathing and posture and can be adapted to any ability. In addition to the movements, we talk about diet, lifestyle, and how to take care of body and mind during the upcoming season.
The Deer Frolic is graceful, strong, and eloquent. Deer have long been associated with fertility, youthfulness and vigor in Chinese culture. Compared to the other animal frolics, the Deer has more twisting, stretching, and sinking motions. When practicing Deer Qigong, one should be alert, poised, and deliberate.
In Daoist philosophy, the fall season is one of consolidation. Signs of the declining year are seen everywhere in nature at this time; the leaves fall as the trees pull their energy inward; the sun changes position and gives us less daylight; the animals and insects become more scarce as the winter approaches. The practice of Deer Qigong emulates these natural occurrences by bringing our own qi inward into our bodies to store for the winter. Some of the routines even call for pointing the fingers out like antlers, which have become fully matured on the male Deer by fall.
