Twenty artisans will display and sell their wares on the grounds of the Joseph F. Glidden Homestead and Historical Center from noon to 4 p.m. this Sunday, August 10th, 2014. Items range from books of interest – with the author available to sign – to glass sculpture to hand-carved birds, home décor, jewelry, painting, fiber arts and much more.
“Arts at the Barn” is part of the Glidden Homestead’s Year of the Barn programming. On the National Register of Historic Places, the home and barn of Joseph F. Glidden are preserved to tell the story of the invention of barbed wire. Glidden received the patent for “The Winner” barbed wire on Nov. 24, 1874. The site also includes a recreated blacksmith shop similar to the one where Glidden’s collaborator, Phineas Vaughan worked farther east on Lincoln Highway. The homestead and welcome center are open for from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesdays, and from noon to 4 p.m. the second and fourth Sundays of the month through October. Special programming is presented on several Sundays throughout the season.
The homestead will be open for tours on August 10th, as well. Admission is $4 per adult, and free for children younger than 14 and Glidden Homestead members. The Glidden Homestead and Historical Center also is a proud participant in the Blue Star Museums program offering free admission to active-duty military service members and their families through Labor Day.
