Chicago Teacher’s Union vs. The State of Illinois vs. Kids Learning Skill Level
The fate of thousands of low-income students hangs in the balance of the next legislative session in Springfield this fall.
That’s when state lawmakers will decide to either extend – or kill – the Invest in Kids Act.
It’s a program that gives less fortunate families access to scholarships to schools that meet their children’s unique needs.
Teachers unions, including the Chicago Teachers Union – whose president Stacy Davis Gates takes advantage of private schooling options for her family – are heavy political spenders in Springfield.
They see the program as a threat to their monopoly power on education – and are lobbying lawmakers aggressively to kill it. NOTE: Current Chicago Mayor Johnson received 20 million campaign funds from the Chicago Teachers Union.
Lawmakers have a choice: their constituents – or their political donors.
