Recently, the police chief announced his intention to fast-track his safe streets initiative. While part of the intent of the ordinance is admirable, the reality is very problematic. The main problem is that Chief Lowery is dead set to get this passed ASAP, with very little debate and very little public input. Mr Lowery has gone on record stating he does not want to hear anything negative by citizens of the community, but when reality aligns with negativity, so be it.

I have asked our police chief the comment, and he refuses. I’ve sent him three emails asking to address these issues, and he still refuses to answer
Mark Charvat, well written! I think you touched on some incredibly important aspects of this ordinance and brought a good amount of awareness to people who may not have known this was happening, or happening in this way. Good looking out!
Iâm not thrilled with the fee aspect of this plan, but I live in a residential neighborhood adjacent to NIU and numerous apartment complexes. I have had to deal with garbage thrown into my yard as people clean out their cars, my child has nearly been hit by people backing into my yard or driveway to turn around, my mailbox and driveway are frequently blocked by parked cars. More distressing is more and more people park their cars in front of my home then walk to apartments nearby. These cars are sometimes here for days. We have already installed camera on our home due to missing packages and littering. Iâm all for limiting parking to residents and invited guests only.
I really don’t want to have to get a permit of any kind. However, it would be great if I could get the minivan parked in front of my house moved. It’s been there two months and in the way of the ideal place to put out my garbage cans.
I agree John. Donât want to have to pay either. But it is truly becoming a safety issue. Some of my neighbors have sold their homes and left DeKalb over this.

No reason for using this as a revenue generator. As I stated in my letter. do this without FEES.
Mark Charvat the residential only parking enforcement could be paid for by the tickets issued to violators. Each home could be issued annually a certain number of passes to be displayed by residents or temporary guests of residents. My grandmothers condo association did this in Schaumburg.
Mark, Iâm sorry, I missed the bottom portion of your letter. I agree with the preferred source of income to administer this program.

At least in my neighborhood we are so tired of the problems. Being woken up by loud groups of people getting out of cars in front of house, leaving beer cans, cigarette butts and more in our yard, then walking over to the apartments at Ridge and Normal.
Or the students who have no respect or regard for our safety or our property. My daughter was wheeling trash cans down to street, when a student whipped into our driveway to turn around. Hit the trash can, knocking it from my daughters hand, narrowly missing her. The students should be parking in NIU property.
Police should be chalking and towing teach them not to leave cars parked for weeks. Where are the police doing this ? This isn’t rocket science folks just creating revenue with residents permission!

This is absurd. I pay over $8K in taxes and have to already live in a sh@/ hole town…canât they just contain that ð©???? Donât restrict the parking, it just pushes it out to the outlying areas!!!

Wow… if I lived in that area, I sure wud be pissed off. This WILL NOT help with high crime rate in that area. Eliminating 1/2 of Sec 8 would help A LOT
A number of residents in this area, whom I have spoken to personally, have requested this for our safety.
I also live here and want an end to the problems with NIU students parking in this neighborhood, when the school has a lot 50 yards away. Or the apartment residents and/or guests who park here instead of at their residence.
It’s coming “soon” Jennifer Flores its phase 2 of the parking restrictions coming through pd. Would guess it will be passed first or 2nd meeting in January…
